Dry Needling

Acupuncture Therapy Scene

Dry needling is a technique that uses thin, solid filament needles inserted into the body to target neuromuscular tissue. Ongoing research continues to investigate its mechanisms in both acute and chronic conditions. Unlike traditional acupuncture, which is rooted in Eastern philosophy, dry needling is based on Western medical principles.

Clinically, dry needling is used to address a range of issues, including muscle tightness, strains and sprains, recovery from overuse, muscle activation, edema reduction, and pain modulation.

Side Effects of Dry Needling

Understanding the effects of your treatment is a vital part of your recovery journey. At Show Me PT, we believe in transparency and education, ensuring you feel confident and informed before every session. While dry needling is highly effective for many, knowing what to expect allows you to focus on the healing process.

The Positive Results

  • Pain Relief: Targets and releases deep trigger points.

  • Improved Mobility: Restores natural movement by reducing muscle tension.

  • Faster Recovery: Stimulates local blood flow and healing response.

  • Tension Reduction: Provides a lasting sense of physical release and relaxation.

Temporary Side Effects

• Muscle soreness: It’s common to feel a deep, workout-like soreness around the areas that were treated.

• Bruising: Small bruises can appear where the needle was inserted and usually fade within a few days.

• Fatigue: Some people feel tired or “worn out” for a short time after treatment as the body responds and heals.

• Lightheadedness: Occasionally, clients may feel briefly dizzy or lightheaded, especially after their first session.

• Minor bleeding: A small drop of blood at the needle site can happen and is typically brief and easy to control.
